Early Life and Domestic Career

On September 8, 1999, Shubman Gill was born in Fazilka, Punjab. He showed precocious cricketing talent from a very young age. Gill’s father Lakhwinder Singh had his own fertilizer business but devoted a lot of time towards training his son in cricket. Gill honed his skills at the iconic PCA stadium in Mohali under coaches like former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh’s father Yograj Singh. He did his schooling from Yadwindra Public School in Punjab’s Patiala.

Gill’s domestic career took off rapidly as he rose through the ranks quickly. He first played for Punjab at age of 15 in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy Under-19 tournament in October 2014. Gill scored a superb 268 runs in 5 innings at a healthy average of 89.33, blasting with a strike rate of over 100. This earned him call up to the Punjab U-16 side where he continued to impress.

At just 17 years and 23 days, Gill made his List A debut for Punjab in September 2016 becoming one of the youngest cricketers to debut in Vijay Hazare Trophy. He had a superb debut season aggregating 358 runs in 5 matches at stellar average of 89.50. Gill’s first class debut followed shortly when he was picked for the Ranji Trophy in October 2016. Batting with maturity beyond years, Gill compiled 355 runs in his debut first-class season.

Gill truly grabbed eyeballs at the 2018 U-19 World Cup leading India to title triumph. Opening the batting, he emerged highest scorer with 372 runs averaging 124. On the back of this stupendous tournament, Kolkata Knight Riders bought Gill at the IPL auction for a whopping INR 1.8 crores. Gill grasped the IPL opportunities well and showcased his talent on the big stage. With his domestic and age group performances, Gill had already marked himself as a special cricketing talent to watch out for.

International Debut

Based on his burgeoning domestic reputation and strong India A performances, Shubman Gill received his maiden national team call up in December 2018 for the New Zealand ODI series. He was named in the squad as a replacement for suspended batsman KL Rahul. Gill did not get to make his debut in that series but selectors kept the faith picking him for the ODI series in Australia in January 2019.

Gill eventually made his much-anticipated India debut on 19 January 2019 in the 3rd ODI against Australia at Melbourne. Batting at number 3 on debut, Gill scored 9 runs before being dismissed by Adam Zampa. Although he could not convert the start, he showed good technique and temperament against a quality matka guessing 143.

Gill continued to be part of the ODI and T20I squads for tours of New Zealand and West Indies in 2019 without getting many chances. He was also named in the India A and Emerging squads that year. Gill enhanced his reputation with brilliant performances in the Deodhar Trophy and unofficial Tests. His consistency and readiness for the biggest stage meant a maiden Test call up was not far away.

Test Debut

Shubman Gill earned his maiden Test call up for the high stakes Border Gavaskar Trophy in Australia in 2020-21. He was initially named as a reserve batsman but injury to regular opener Rohit Sharma opened the doors. Gill was named in playing eleven for the second Test at Melbourne, becoming India’s youngest opening debutant in Australia.

Gill announced his arrival with a fluent 45 in the first innings, showcasing his assured footwork. In the second innings, he matka scored with an elegant 35. Gill followed it up with a 50 in the third Test showing composure beyond years against Australia’s fierce pace attack. He finished the series with 259 runs in 6 innings at solid average of 51.8.

Gill’s performances in Australia marked the arrival of a potential great opening batsman that India had yearned for long. Former cricketers were unanimous in their praise of Gill’s technique, calmness and maturity. Despite India’s historic series loss, Gill emerged as a major positive showing immense potential at the highest level. He also earned praise from the then captain Ajinkya Rahane for his work ethic, willingness to learn and self-belief.
